Causes of the WarThere were many causes of the war but they were mainly territory reasons. When Texas became an independent state in 1836 Mexico did not like it because the US was going to annex the state. The Mexicans were so mad that they went to Texas where they found some American soldiers and killed them. James A. Polk, the president of the US at the time, decided to finally start the war that he was longing for. He was just waiting for a good reason.

Battle of Palo Alto:
This battle was the first major engagement with the US and the Mexicans. This battle took place March 8th 1846. The US troops were running away from the Mexicans they ran into some other Mexican troops in Palo Alto, this caused a battle. The Leaders were General Taylor for the US and General Arista for Mexico. Arista ended up losing between 250-400 men.
Battle of Buena Vista:
This Battle was the most dramatic fight between Mexico and the US. After the Battle of Monterrey President Polk ordered Taylor and his troops to join General Scott in an expedition towards Vera Cruz. When General Santa Anna heard of this he ordered his Mexican troops to go and attack them. When he found The American troops they attacked and the Mexicans lost 3,400 men while Taylor lost 650. After the big fight Mexico declared victory the next day.

The Treaty of Guadeloupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican American War on February 2, 1848. The treaty gave the US more than 500,000 square miles of Mexican territory. The agreement was made with Mexican Officials and Nicholas P. Trist. President Polk did not want Trist to make the agreement because he wasn't an official but he disobeyed orders and made the agreement with Mexico anyways. Whatever he did it worked!
